John counsels a large range of clients on how best to proactively, effectively, and honestly engage in and influence the public policy process. He has extensive experience in budget and appropriations negotiations, state and local government policy, and the State of Illinois’ legislative process.
John served as Issues Director for State Senator Barack Obama’s Congressional campaign in 2000. He also served on the Board of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence and is a former Board member of Personal PAC. John is also a past President of Democratic Leadership for the 21st Century.
John also served as Democratic Committeeman of Chicago’s 42nd Ward. The 42nd Ward encompasses the Gold Coast, Streeterville, Near North, River West and River North neighborhoods on Chicago’s north side and the Loop neighborhood in downtown Chicago. The 42nd Ward is an economic engine for the City, the gateway to many of the City’s visitors and a great place to live and work.
John has a unique knowledge of the Illinois General Assembly and its staff gained from working as special counsel to Senate President Emil Jones, Jr. on the State’s intensive decennial redistricting project. The legislative map and subsequent elections since 2002 have since produced super-majorities for both the Senate Democratic Caucus and the House Democratic Caucus.
John maintains strong relationships with the Legislature, the Governor’s Office and key agencies, DuPage County, Cook County, and the Illinois Congressional delegation.
John graduated with honors from DePaul University law school in 1994 and was a member of DePaul’s law review and the Order of the Coif. He spent several years as a commercial litigator and trial attorney before shifting his focus to governmental affairs consulting..
